At Nailsworth C of E Primary School, we pride ourselves on providing a high quality physical education that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We provide rich opportunities for pupils to become physically confident designed to inspire and engage all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities.
Our school is situated in large grounds and children are supported to take full advantage of this, using our Multi-Use-Games-Area, netball and football pitches as well as accessing the nature garden and our large playing field. Children participate in unique experiences, such as our whole school triathlon in PE lessons. Forest Green Rovers is situated next to the school and the opportunity to work with players and coaches is embraced.
We offer of a huge range of sporting activities within school, after school and within the wider community. We recognise that physical activity is of key importance in emotional and physical health and encourage children to gain experience in as many sports and physical activities as possible. We also work closely with St George’s Church and Sportily to promote our Christian values through ‘Active R.E’ and other sporting activities, in order to build on Christian values such as Respect and Perseverance.
P.E. and the Sports Premium
The government provides additional ring-fenced funding for all primary schools, to improve provision of PE and sport. This is can be used in a variety of ways to develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport provision. It can also be used to build capacity and capability within school to ensure that improvements made are sustainable in future years.
At school, we use the Sports Premium to:
- provide targeted activities or support to involve and encourage the least active children
- encourage active play during break times and lunchtimes
- establish, extend and fund the variety of school sports clubs available
- providing staff with professional development, mentoring, appropriate training and resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively to all pupils across the school
- introduce new sports and physical activities to encourage more pupils to take up sport and physical activities
- broaden the variety of extra-curricular physical activities after school
- organise sports competitions and tournaments within the school
- coordinate and enter sport competitions or tournaments across the local area
There are 5 key indicators in which schools should expect to see improvement:
- The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines recommend that primary school pupils undertake at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day in school
- The profile of PESSPA (Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity) being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
- Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
- Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- Increased participation in competitive sport
