Nailsworth: a Britain in Bloom GOLD winner (2019)

The idea for the community garden started in 2016 when the school asked two parents to restore the derelict pond by the Forest area on the school grounds. Clearing it was a slow process. Early in 2019, Richard Blackwell and Nailsworth Rotary built the raised beds in the shape of the letters F and G, representing Forest Green. In spring the first seeds were planted: beans, spinach, cabbage, courgettes, strawberries, blackberries, herbs, garlic and onions. These were harvested by children and were prepared and eaten for school dinners in September. In March 2020, Bee Keeper, Heather Moore visited the Year 2 class and showed them how to make a bee hotel.

Five families, School Garden Ambassadors and Nailsworth in Bloom are supporting the care and growth of the gardening plot. There are always small tasks to do: weeding, digging, picking, watering and planting.
